How to half double crochet stitch

Half double crochet (hdc) is a slightly taller stitch than single crochet. Here’s how to work the half double crochet stitch:

  1. Start by making a slip knot on your hook and chain the desired number of stitches.
  2. Yarn over (bring the yarn over the hook from back to front)
  3. Insert your hook into the third chain from the hook (counting the loop on the hook as the first chain)
  4. Yarn over again and draw the yarn through the chain stitch. You should now have three loops on your hook.
  5. Yarn over again and draw the yarn through all three loops on your hook.
  6. You’ve completed one half double crochet stitch.
  7. To continue, yarn over and insert your hook into the next chain stitch. Repeat steps 4-6 across the row.

As you work the half double crochet, take care to maintain an even tension. And make sure to yarn over once before insert hook on next stitch, not to forget the first yarn over before inserting hook.

The half double crochet stitch is used in a variety of patterns, and can create a slightly taller and more open fabric than single crochet. It can be used to create a variety of patterns, textured and solid fabric depending on your project.
